Meenakshi Seshadri is arguably one of the most rigorously trained classical dancers in Bollywood history, mastering four distinct styles: Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Odissi. Her dedication to the pure art form remained steadfast even during her peak film career, and she was known to perform full classical recitals while simultaneously shooting for blockbusters.
She trained under Vempati Chinna Satyam for Kuchipudi and Jaya Rama Rao for Odissi. Her mother was also instrumental in her Bharatanatyam training, ensuring that Meenakshi stayed grounded in tradition from a very young age.
After winning the Miss India contest in 1981 at age 17, she entered cinema but never abandoned dance. A lifelong Vegetarian, she credits her meat-free diet for her physical agility and the endurance required to master four different dance forms. Since retiring from cinema, she has dedicated her life to teaching at her school in the USA, where she cooks traditional South Indian vegetarian meals for her family and students.
She delivered powerful performances in Damini, Hero, and Ghatak. After marriage to investment banker Harish Mysore, she moved to Dallas, Texas. There, she raised her daughter and son and continues to propagate Indian classical dance through the 'Cherish Institute of Dance', serving as a cultural ambassador for the Indian diaspora.
