Kumari Mayshark

Bharatanatyam in New York City

“[Dance] has continued to be my link to my spirituality…In the most intense moments, it can be out of body almost. I’ve had moments on stage where, even though I’m there and I remember the choreography and I’m performing it, I really do feel like an instrument. I feel like I’m there for a purpose and I’m instrumental in connecting the audience to a greater or more spiritual consciousness…And then other times, I’m just like, ‘My feet hurt.’”

Kumari Mayshark is a Bharatanatyam dancer whose journey is deeply rooted in spirituality and devotion. Raised in a Krishna Consciousness household in England, she was immersed in Indian culture and art forms from an early age. Inspired by her sister and under the guidance of her guru, Indira Kadambi, Kumari developed a profound connection to classical Indian dance.

Her practice transcends performance, aligning with the concept of yukta-vairāgya—offering her art in service to the divine. Kumari has performed internationally, including her Arangetram in Chennai. For Kumari, Bharatanatyam is a bridge between the spiritual and physical worlds, grounding her and connecting her audience to a higher consciousness.

Through her dance, Kumari continues to embody her faith, transforming movement into an offering of joy, devotion, and self-discovery.
