Bharatanatyam in Belgium

“If you have it in your heart that you absolutely want to dance, then you must do it. Because otherwise, you’re doing a disservice to yourself and to everyone else around you. There’s nothing worse than someone living life unhappily. If you knew that dance was the one thing that was going to make you happy, then you absolutely have to do it.”

Sooraj Subramaniam is a Malaysian-born dancer whose artistry spans classical Indian styles and contemporary forms, bridging cultural and creative boundaries. Trained initially in Bharatanatyam under Ramli Ibrahim at the Sutra Foundation, he later expanded his repertoire to include Odissi and western contemporary dance during his studies at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Sooraj’s choreography reflects his unique perspective, interweaving the precision of classical technique with the fluidity of contemporary movement. Now based in Belgium, he works as a freelance dancer, performing on international stages and drawing inspiration from his rich mosaic of experiences. For Sooraj, dance is not only a celebration of his roots but a medium for exploring identity and transcending artistic limitations.
