Christopher Gurusamy
Bharatanatyam in Chennai
“When you watch good dance, it’s life-confirming, it’s an affirmation. You’re watching this person be so much more than themselves, connecting with something so much more than themselves and sharing that with other people. A brilliant performer is someone who are no longer themselves; they are just vessels to dance.”
Christopher Gurusamy is a Chennai-based Bharatanatyam dancer whose work bridges tradition and contemporary expression. With roots in both British and Indian heritage, his dance journey began with the influence of his aunt, Kalakshetra alumna Jayalakshmi Raman, and grew through training at Kalakshetra under renowned mentor Leela Samson.
Christopher has performed on prestigious stages, including the Music Academy in Chennai and internationally, earning acclaim for his nuanced technique and innovative interpretations of classical compositions. Grounded in tradition yet forward-looking, he strives to highlight the timeless relevance of Bharatanatyam, celebrating its aesthetic power and rich storytelling potential.
Sooraj’s choreography reflects his unique perspective, interweaving the precision of classical technique with the fluidity of contemporary movement. Now based in Belgium, he works as a freelance dancer, performing on international stages and drawing inspiration from his rich mosaic of experiences. For Sooraj, dance is not only a celebration of his roots but a medium for exploring identity and transcending artistic limitations.
