An arangetram is a formal debut performance by a student of Indian classical dance or music, marking the culmination of their training and readiness to perform independently as an artist.

The term originates from Tamil, where “arangam” means “stage” and “etram” means “ascent” or “climbing.” This performance symbolizes the dancer’s or musician’s ascension to the stage.

An Arangetram is a deeply emotional and joyous occasion, celebrating not only the art but also the cultural heritage it represents. The Natya Project is looking for current and former students to share their journeys to this milestone event and their experiences of their debut solo performances. As a dancer, this is a great opportunity to share your personal story and to be part of this project and publication.

Although Natya Journal is based in North America, we invite participants residing in India, as well as those from the global diaspora (both NRIs & those of non-Indian origin). We hope to capture varying experiences of classical Indian dance throughout the world.

If you’re interested in participating, please see the submission guidelines below, and feel free to get in touch with us directly at info@natyajournal.com.
