Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Bharatanatyam Dancer, 1994 Miss World & Actress

"I danced with her [Bharatanatyam Guru Lata Surendra] from second grade to seventh grade and ever since then, dancing became my way of life. I knew what I was experiencing with her, from her would remain a part of me always."

Before conquering the world as a beauty queen and actress, Aishwarya Rai underwent formal training in Bharatanatyam. She trained for five years during her formative school years, a foundation that gave her the poise and expressive prowess seen in her cinematic performances. Her ability to blend the rhythmic precision of classical dance with the demands of commercial choreography has made her an icon of grace.

She learned under Guru Lata Surendra. Aishwarya has often expressed deep gratitude to her teacher, crediting her for instilling the discipline and "natya" that later defined her career. Even decades after her formal lessons, she frequently attributes her work ethic and physical control to the lessons learned in her guru’s studio.

Aishwarya’s dance background allowed her to execute complex semi-classical pieces in films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, and Taal with ease. Her training emphasizes abhinaya (expression), which complements her acting by allowing her to convey deep emotion through subtle facial movements and hand gestures (mudras).

One of the most recognizable faces in the world, her career spans decades with hits like Jodhaa Akbar and Ponniyin Selvan. She is married to actor Abhishek Bachchan, and they have a daughter, Aaradhya. Aishwarya has expressed hope that her daughter will also embrace the arts, as she believes the discipline of classical training is a gift that stays with an individual throughout their life.
